Basic Chiropractic Information
Chiropractic treatments are known as adjustments and they can correct
spinal misalignments and restore movement to fixated spinal joints.
Almost anyone is a candidate; newborns, infants, children, seniors, and
everyone in between; even most patients who have had spinal surgery. Often
areas below or above the surgical site will become fixated and lose
movement and determining if adjustments are contraindicated is a clinical
call Dr. Steve,
Dr. Paula , or
Dr. Ben will make. If you are not a candidate,
they will refer you to a specialist who can help with your particular situation.
The process is extremely safe, in fact taking an over-the-counter pain
reliever is about 100 times more risky. Most patients do not find this
process uncomfortable or painful. Most look forward to the sense of release
and relief of pressure that is often felt and patients report a sense of
well being, and improved mobility immediately following their treatment.
Sometimes the patient gets immediate relief, but most often they get relief
over time through a series of adjustments.
In order to actually correct the problem, rather than simply alleviate
the symptoms, a series of treatments is usually necessary.
After your initial visit, the doctor will discuss with you a specific
chiropractic care plan best suited to your individual needs. In most cases,
the doctor will use the classic technique developed by D.D. Palmer,
the founder of chiropractic in the United States.
This is a motion palpation, full spine technique that allows for
specificity in correcting mechanical distortions of the spine.
As part of our multidisciplinary approach to health care, the doctor's
will often also use some type of modality to help alleviate your
pain and progress your care. These may include
massage therapy ,
intersegmental traction, or one of several forms of electrical
muscle stimulation, ice or heat. They will also give you advice on some
strategies you may incorporate at home to help you feel better faster.
Our office also provides specific stretching or strength
training exercises to help improve your range of motion, or increase the
muscular support of certain joints.
It is best to follow the doctor's advice to get the most out of your
adjustments and progress as quickly as possible towards better health.
Care Plans
Corrective care is a series of more frequent adjustments (usually
2 - 3 times a week, for four weeks, and tapers after that). Your
specific schedule is designed for you to produce the greatest results
in the shortest amount of time. If we don’t see you often our ability
to reduce negative patterns in your spine is impaired. The amount of
time you spend for these adjustments is dependent on many factors.
Regular Maintenance is a once a month plan. With maximum restoration
of spinal function, a regular chiropractic checkup can save time and
money by helping prevent little problems from becoming serious.
